The power of a simple visit rings loud and clear in this story. It’s a sweet primer in pastoral care for children. First, Mole has an awareness of missing his friend, Rabbit. He begins to take action and burrow a tunnel toward her home. Squirrel and Hedgehog are inspired by Mole’s leading and follow along. Once at Rabbit’s burrow, they find her resting in bed, lonely and miserable, with a bad cold. Hedgehog fluffs her bed with some fresh dry leaves. Squirrel brings some nuts he had hidden near by. Mole realizes, somewhat abashed, that he had not brought any gift. Rabbit assures him that he had brought the best gift of all — he brought her dear friends for a visit!
