Anxiety about the state of the world is common among young Friends. From the widely acclaimed Powell House Youth Program, this experiential retreat curriculum provides a safe place to voice the fear that burdens so many who seek to live with awareness and authenticity. Through individual, small and large group exercises, the program plants seeds of hope and explores “The Great Turning,” a vision for a new society. This curriculum is designed as a weekend retreat for high school and young adult Friends, but can be adapted to other settings.
Chris DeRoller and Mike Clark, have served for over 20 years as youth program directors for the Powell House retreat center under the care of New York Yearly Meeting. They have designed and facilitated retreats for 4th to 12th graders, creating spaces where each child can be themselves and allow/encourage others to do the same. They work on developing emotional literacy, situational awareness, and fostering a joyful creative environment.
